The Future of Electric Roads, How Far Are We?

Sweden is one of the first countries in Europe to create a permanent electric road. It will charge electric vehicles while they are roaming on the road. This has been a vision of many people in the past but were not able to do it. Because of various reasons such as Technological advancements, materials, and many more.  This country has already created electric roads which are temporary in the city of Lund in Southern Sweden. But it is still in the initial stages where there are more things to solve. The fully functional version might be completed in 2025. So it’s not too far away to become a reality.

Not all vehicles will be able to travel on this road to generate electricity. It will require special technologies needed for it to work. But they are confident that this will be very useful towards global warming. And to stop the consumption of fossil fuels and the burning of gas.

Currently, the engineers are working hard to create this type of road in other cities as well. If this works out to become a success, a lot more countries and continents will come forward to implement the same Technology.

How The Road Works

Each of the coils that is present inside the road is activated only when the receiver is present. So that means even if people or pets or other vehicles roam on it, won’t cause an issue such as electrical interference. They also say that this charging road will also work in snowy conditions as well as ice. One of the biggest challenges is to stop the big vehicles which consume a lot of fuel. They cause global warming by using this technology. Even if 30% of the big vehicles use this method, the consumption of fuel will decrease almost to 45%, which is a big deal.

The E20 highway has been chosen. It is located in the middle of all the major cities in Sweden. This is part of a much bigger plan that will be established over 1800 miles of roads that will get the electric technology.

More Use Cases

Another advantage to this type of road is that private car owners. They will be able to use pads or a kind of plate in the car. It will be used as a wireless charging pad to charge their phones through the road technology.

And not only Sweden but other countries or trying to implement this as well. It was tried in Michigan USA as a trial and had a huge success. Germany and France have also partnered to share their findings and work together to build a stable version of electric roads.

I feel using these types of roads is useful for the future. Because more and more people will stop using fossil fuels. Such as petrol kerosene and others. A decade ago we were living in a world where even an electric car is expensive. But now electric cars are somewhat cheaper than petrol ones. So we might be going on the right path.
